DATA GATHERING AND GDPR

MAP gathers the following areas of data for which GDPR has implications:

  1. Individual-level blood test results from published literature and sources such as DHS Measure. We also collect aggregated test data. For further details, please see our page on routine surveillance data.In all cases, individual records are anonymous and with controls in place by the original sources to prevent the tracing of data back to a given individual.Note that MAP does not go into the field to collect primary data through surveys, we are simply consumers of primary data published by other sources.
  2. Routine surveillance data on malaria cases and deaths. For further details, please see our page on parasite rate surveys. These data are from publishined reports by country Ministry of Health or other governmental or non-governmental organisations. In all cases, data is aggregated by the source and no individual-level data is held by MAP.
  3. Contact details for authors of scientific papers. As part of both the above data-gathering exercises, we search for publications and record our findings in an EndNote library. This EndNote library includes the names and, where available in the public domain, email addresses of authors. We use these pubic-domain email addresses to contact authors on an individual, case-by-case basis to enquire about their publications. We do not pass these email addresses onto any third-party and do not engage in any bulk-emailing exercises for purposes including (but not limited to) marketing, personal data-gathering, surveys, or fund-raising.
  4. Email addresses for people who elect to join our mailing list to be informed of when we have new outputs to share. Joining this mailing list is on an invite-only basis at present and full consent is granted by the individual we are holding the email address of. Under no other circumstances is anyone added to this mailing list.

DATA CONFIDENTIALITY

The majority of the data collected by MAP is already in the public domain. However, some data is provided to us by organisations and groups in confidence for the purposes of answering a specific research question. Uner no circumstances are these confidential data shared with third parties and where appropriate, access is restricted within the MAP group to only those team members authorised to have access.
