World Malaria Day 2025

World Malaria Day 2025 raises awareness of malaria as a leading cause of child mortality and a disease that still kills around 500,000 people each year. This year’s theme, “Malaria Ends With Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite,” calls for renewed efforts across all levels — from global policy to community action — to drive progress towards malaria elimination.

At the Malaria Atlas Project (MAP), we are proud to contribute to this mission through innovative data science and geospatial analysis. The MAP team works to deliver world-leading insights that inform malaria control strategies globally. Recent research by Associate Professor Daniel Weiss, published in The Lancet, Mapping the global prevalence, incidence, and mortality of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax malaria, 2000–22: a spatial and temporal modelling study presents the most comprehensive, high-resolution maps of P. falciparum and P. vivax malaria to date. These maps are vital tools for tracking local progress, identifying populations at highest risk, and guiding targeted interventions. Read the full article here.

As the global fight against malaria faces challenges — including drug and insecticide resistance, changing climates, and shifting funding landscapes — MAP remains committed to providing modern analytics that help accelerate malaria control and elimination efforts. Our goal is to translate research into real-world impact: more cases prevented, more lives saved, and continued progress towards ending malaria for good.
